Boogster's Blog

November 17th

Oh man, it’s been a long time since I posted a blog.  Mainly because the stock market has shot higher, with the exception of the stocks that I sold in my last post.  Since I sold my UNG (natty gas etf), it’s gone down over 15% or $1,500 because I had 1,500 shares short.  Also ETFC, Etrade Bank, has gone down over 2 points, or 20%.  I had 1,000 shares…that’s another $2k. Ugghh. Here’s what I’m holding now: -750 SBUX …

Sold Everything, Except SBUX and BBY

I just sold out of everything except my BBY and SBUX shorts.  SBUX reports earnings after the close today.  I am short 750 shares of the stock and own 5 Jan 2012 $45 puts.  I stand to get my ass lit on fire if Starbucks reports good earnings, but I am prepared for it.  BBY, I am still short 400 shares of the stock, and own 3 Jan 2012 $40 puts.  I’m not too worried about that one because I …

Blue Horseshoe Loves NFLX and Banks

netflix-app-logo

Pure gambling, but I’m gonna get 100 shares of NFLX at the close today.  It’s trading near $76 right now, down $42 or 35% on the day. Pretty sick. Also, looks like the banks are going to be in play over the next 6-18 months.  I’ll be buying shares of Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), and UYG (financials ETF) over the next few months.  Gonna scale in, so that I won’t have to time the market.  Looking to …

And just like that…

Let’s start with the good news.  I finished the Army Ten Miler in 1:15:53, slower than my best 10-miler time of 1:14:14 (7:26 minutes/mile), but 3 1/2 minutes faster than my best ATM finish at 1:19:34 (7:57 minutes/mile).  I tried, but I just couldn’t do it.  To be honest, I probably should’ve planned it out a little bit instead of just leaving it up to guesswork.  I ran the first mile in 6:45, then I kinda just tried to push …

Golf, Steve Jobs, Portfolio, Starbucks, Army Ten Miler…

ArmyTenMilerLogo-small1

So, after posting my best round ever at South Riding (81), I shot a  92 from the whites at Pleasant Valley, 100 from the whites at Tantallon Golf Club, and 107 at Augustine blues.  F me.  I don’t know where my swing went, but it’s gone.  That’s golf.  It comes, it goes, then it comes back…I mean, look at Tiger.  My problem is that I’m never content with my swing…I always want to make it better…more on plane, more lag, …

Short sale of a stock is always taxed as short term capital gains

short-sale-stock-short-term-capital-gains

I didn’t realize this, but it doesn’t matter how long you’ve held a stock for…if you sell a stock short, then it will always be taxed as a short term capital gain.     I thought Ameritrade had made a mistake at first, but then I did some researching, and it looks like it’s true.  Also, if there is a dividend, you’ll have to pay the dividend to the person who you borrowed the stock from.  Usually, it’ll be noted …

About to Gloat, but…

I was just about to write a post about how my pair trades were doing, and then I thought to myself…what always happens when I write a post about trade?  Well, my positions go south.  So, to pre-empt the south-ness, I decided to fight fire with fire, and sold/covered all of my pair trades. Covered 1900 SIRI @ $1.71 for +$220 Covered 307 ETFC @ $9.62 for +$543 Sold 349 P @ $12.20 for +$757 Sold 240 AMTD @ $14.95 …

Best Golf Round; Portfolio Update; FTP “Ponzi Scheme”

I took a two week break from golf due to the crazy amounts of rain, and one week vacation to the outer banks.  I ended up going to the range on Monday, and then playing Wednesday at South Riding.  Up until this last round, I’ve been struggling, shooting in the 90s, and even 100, but golf is such a no-rhyme-or-reason game, so…I shot an 81 yesterday.  40 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine.  The biggest thing …

Out 1 AAPL Jan 2012 $350 Call at $78.50 for +$2,000

Heh.  I got lucky on this one.  I entered at $58.50 five days ago and this morning, I’m up $2k, so I had to take profits.  That’s a 30%+ gain in 5 days.  Since this was a pair trade, I had to get out of my google put as well. Out 1 GOOG Jan 2012 $550 Put at $49.30 for +$70 Definitely got a little lucky with this one.  Too bad SBUX is sticking it in me.  I’m currently down …

Made a few moves today…

Well, first off…I’m glad I at least sold some of my BBY yesterday.  We’re up 2.5 points since I sold.  That’s $700 from 300 shares…the bad news is that I’m still holding 400 shares + 5 Calls.  I guess giving back some is how this game works.  Every time I open my yap though, I should know to sell…almost always a turning point when I open my yap.  I have a feeling that BBY will squeeze some more (a lot …

Pair Trades

pandora-radio

I’ve been thinking about some more pair trades, since this AMZN / BBY trade would’ve worked so well, had I kept the AMZN part of the trade. I’m gonna stick to companies that I know, so here’s what I’m thinking now: Ameritrade (AMTD) long $14.52/ E*Trade (ETFC) short $11.22 Apple (AAPL) long $389.30/ Google (GOOG) short $531.40 Pandora (P) long $10.24 / XM-Sirius (SIRI) short $1.80 First off, Ameritrade is the nuts for online brokages.  I’ve had accounts at a …
